Catching Kids Before They Fall
In three years, Juan, 18, has gone from a passive, hopeless teenager to an energized leader of peers in large part because of the investment made in him at Tshimakain (shim-a-kin) Creek Camp. Juan comes from an impoverished, single-parent family who is continually on the move.
Dennis Roach, Youth Outreach Director, recognized potential in Juan and invited him to serve as a camp intern. Over the course of the summer, he hefted luggage, sorted laundry, served as a counselor to younger boys, and led kids on the ropes course.
Back at home, Juan is emerging as a leader among leaders. In Dennis’ weekly leadership group, Juan helps to hold his friends accountable. He mentors younger boys and helps serve meals at the Youth for Christ gathering place in his neighborhood. Juan has made the decision not to run from his circumstances, but to embrace them and work to make a difference in the midst of them.
Juan is just one of hundreds of kids blessed by the ministry of this beautiful place.
