Ministering to the Growing Numbers of Homeless Women and Children
Union Gospel Mission Ministries is committed to meeting the unique needs of homeless women and children through our two distinctive shelters: the Crisis Shelter for Women and Children at 1234 E. Sprague, providing emergency assistance to single women and families in crisis; and Anna Ogden Hall at 2828 W. Mallon, offering a long-term women’s recovery program.
Background
In the early seventies, leadership at the Union Gospel Mission recognized that while the number of men staying at our Men’s Shelter had been holding steady at an average of 120 per night, the number of homeless women and children was steadily rising. Anna Ogden Hall was opened in 1971 in response to that need, and for over 30 years, it functioned primarily as a crisis shelter.
Over the years, it became increasingly apparent that in order to facilitate permanent life change, the women we were serving needed more than emergency assistance, and Anna Ogden Hall became a residential facility with a recovery program lasting between 18 months and two years. As a consequence, less space was available for the emergency shelter needs of women and children.
In 2006, the Budget Motel on East Sprague was purchased and renovated into the Crisis Shelter for Women and Children. Since it opened in January, 2007, the Crisis Shelter has provided a safe, healthy, short-term refuge for over 1,700 women and children. Currently, it is the only emergency housing option in Spokane that will allow women to have their teenage sons stay with them. Virtually from the beginning, the shelter has operated at capacity, regularly housing between 50 and 60 individuals, depending on the number of children each mother brings.
